What People Are Saying About 'Eighth Grade Bites'
"A spooky mystery that's funny, gruesome, heartwarming, spellbinding,
sad, joyous, surprising and topped off with a tasty blend of blood and
chocolate. Yum. What more could you ask for?" ~D.J. MacHale,
New York Times-bestselling author of PENDRAGON: JOURNAL OF AN ADVENTURE
THROUGH TIME AND SPACE
"'Eighth grade Bites' had me on the edge of my seat. It's a
great piece of fiction. It drops you right into the action, grabs
you by the throat (pun intended), and won't let go. Vladimir Tod
is a truly sympathetic character cursed with an existence not of
his own doing, but doing his best to do the right thing. It's part
'Goosebumps' mixed with 'Harry Potter' and a dash – no, a heaping
tablespoon – of Stephen King. If you're in eighth grade, or
a vampire, or an eighth grade vampire, 'Eighth Grade Bites' is a
definite must read!"~Butch Hartman, creator of Nickelodeon's
THE FAIRLY ODD PARENTS and DANNY PHANTOM
"Eighth Grade Bites is a terrific vampire tale told with a
sharp, middle-school grin. It definitely does not bite!" ~Christopher
Moore, author of BLOODSUCKING FIENDS and A DIRTY JOB
"Eighth Grade Bites is a delightful novel filled with dark,
biting humor that will appeal to everyone who ever felt they were
different. A deft hand at depicting the angst of teen years, Heather
Brewer does a wonderful job blending vampire legend with the modern
day horror that strikes fear in the heart of so many: the eighth
grade."~Katie MacAlister, New York Times-bestselling author
of EVEN VAMPIRES GET THE BLUES
"Heather Brewer has invented the most endearing of vampires
in Vlad, an eighth grader juggling the woes of adolescence with the
decidedly unique difficulties of being a vampire. She perfectly captures
the humor and angst of eighth grade, mixed with a nail-biting adventure.
Utterly charming and irresistible!" ~Liza Conrad, author of
HIGH SCHOOL BITES: THE LUCY CHRONICLES
"This book will fool you. Just when you think you've identified
it as a story lit by the cheery glow of a slightly scary jack-o-lantern,
it becomes something else -- a tale told by the flickering light
of a dying campfire late at night. And the shadows are very dark
indeed. A surprising mix of humor and horror." ~Douglas
Rees, author of VAMPIRE HIGH
"Fresh and fast-paced, with just the right brew of chills and
laughs. I’m looking forward to finding out what happens when
Vlad hits Grade Nine." ~Nancy Baker, author of KISS OF THE
VAMPIRE
"A fabulous book from a gifted storyteller! I never wanted
it to end." ~Gena Showalter, author of OH MY GOTH |

questions, questions... so many questions to ask.
1. What is Auntie Heather's most shocking moment (aha moment) being in the publishing world?
2. Tell us the story f how Vlad's parents met and fell in love.
3. What does Vlad want to be when he grows up?
4. What did Vlad's father do for a living? Or was he independently wealthy?
I might have a few more, but that will get the ball rolling :)
Oooh, good ones, Ewoh!
1. What is Auntie Heather's most shocking moment (aha moment) being in the publishing world?
Well, there have been many. Most recently, that I will likely never hit a bestseller list with Vlad. I love him and he's awesome, but there are so many vampire books out there right now that the odds are slim to none (actually they're slim to none of ever hitting a list with any book...but especially with horror or variances thereof, I think). Depressing, yes. But eye-opening.
2. Tell us the story of how Vlad's parents met and fell in love.
Ah, now this is all outlined in Tomas's journal. It's your basic boy-views-girl-as-tv-dinner-then-realizes-that-she's-actually-a-person-and-a-pretty-one-at-that tale. Tomas had decided to feed on her, but when he met her eyes...he saw something more there. They fell into a whirlwind romance after that, and along came Vlad.
3. What does Vlad want to be when he grows up?
Like many teens, he has no idea.
4. What did Vlad's father do for a living? Or was he independently wealthy?
Tomas came from a wealthy family, but most of his money came from wise investments.
YAY! Question day!
1. Do you watch anime?
2. Do you have any special sites you like to go on to chat?
3. Have you read the first chapter of my story (My Guardian Angel) on Myspace yet?
4. What's Vlad middle name? :)=
5. How was your school life back in the day?
Heehee. I like Question Day. :D
1. Do you watch anime?
On occasion. I've recently started a love affair with DeathNote.
2. Do you have any special sites you like to go on to chat?
Sadly, no. If I started chatting again (I used to, waaaaaaay back in the day) I'd never find time to write.
3. Have you read the first chapter of my story (My Guardian Angel) on Myspace yet?
I don't think so. But I will. Promise (Just can't promise when...)
4. What's Vlad middle name? :)=
Ha! Faked you out. He doesn't have one. ;)
5. How was your school life back in the day?
It sucked. Big time. I was enormously unpopular and the Wii hadn't been invented yet. Cell phones were as big as your head, and the only thing keeping me from being shoved in a locker daily was that I was a girl.
Life=much better now. :)
1. What would Vlad do if he had someone that was obsessed with him?
2. Do you (and Vlad) have one favorite song that bets them all?
3. What time of day was Vlad born?
(5:43pm here! =D )
4. Sharpies are the best thing, right?
1) What is you favorite book? Besides the ones you've made?
2) Whats your favorite food/drink?
3) Do you cut your wrists? (I know, weird question)
4) What IS 1,658 divided by purple monkey? I'm a math genius, and I don't know that.

1. What would Vlad do if he had someone that was obsessed with him?
In a good way or a bad way? Actually, this will be something Vlad soon faces...so hang in there ;)
2. Do you (and Vlad) have one favorite song that bets them all?
Nope. We both love too many to choose, but "Creep" by Radiohead is right up there.
3. What time of day was Vlad born?
(5:43pm here! =D )
The smae as me, 9:26pm (we're both night owls) ;)
4. Sharpies are the best thing, right?
Right alongside a good pair of fangs!
1) What is you favorite book? Besides the ones you've made?
Hmmm...it's so hard to pick just one! I don't think I can...sorry!
2) Whats your favorite food/drink?
Cadbury eggs and Diet, Caffeine-Free Pepsi.
3) Do you cut your wrists? (I know, weird question)
Nope (I tattoo them). And I don't think cutting is the answer to feeling better about anything. If you or anyone you know cuts themself, please stop and/or get them help.
4) What IS 1,658 divided by purple monkey? I'm a math genius, and I don't know that.
The answer, my dear, is 42. ;)
How did the story come to you?
How do you find the time to write?
Is Vald avalible? Or is he with Mereidith?
Does your family help out with your writing?
How much of Vald is based on you?
When you thought of the idea of the Vald stories, did it just flow, because I'm trying to write a bunch of my vamp stories but get nothing. How'd you do it?
Will Vald finally be accpected by others or stay kind of a outcast?
Is it true that oppisites attract or is it just a saying?
Is/was your husband anything like you high school? How'd you meet?
Uhhh...thats all i can think about. thanks for letting me get this stuff out. i love your books!
How did the story come to you?
In a rush. A picture of a kid with balck hair and fangs popped into my head, and all at once, I knew everything about him. :)
How do you find the time to write?
I make the time to write. Writing is my job, so I do it between the hours of 8:30am and 3pm...while my family is at work/school. Unless I'm on a roll, then I write even longer.
Is Vald avalible? Or is he with Mereidith?
You'll have this answer once you read NINTH GRADE SLAYS. ;)
Does your family help out with your writing?
Well, my husband helps me work through tough spots and will occasionally give me a great idea. And if i get lost looking for a word, my son will help me out. My daughter (she's only 7) thinks she can write better than I can (she's probably right).
How much of Vlad is based on you?
Much of Vlad is based on me. I'd say 80%. What isn't is based on my son.
When you thought of the idea of the Vlad stories, did it just flow, because I'm trying to write a bunch of my vamp stories but get nothing. How'd you do it?
There were days that it flowed, but for the most part...it was a lot of hard work. Let me clue you in to my formula for writing a book: butt + chair = writing. You have to do the work...and block out all distractions. If you want it bad enough...it'll happen. :)
Will Vlad finally be accepted by others or stay kind of a outcast?
That's another thing you'll have to wait and see on ;)
Is it true that opposites attract or is it just a saying?
They can...but relationships like that are challenging, I think.
Is/was your husband anything like you high school? How'd you meet?
My husband is in many ways my polar opposite. He's very suave, very stylish, a talented musician, great at most everything he does the first time out...and I...am not. ;) That being said, he's my best friend and we have a lot in common too.
We met at a band practice (he was the lead singer) thirteen years ago, and haven't looked back.
1. Have you ever heard of Vampire Clan??? it took place in Flordia/New orleans.
2. Have you ever once considered thinking you were a vampire?
3. What tattoos do you have??
hey if you want to talk more about Vampire Clan i can fill you in with a couple of websites and a movie all about it! =) =)
1. What would Vlad do if he had someone that was obsessed with him?
In a good way or a bad way? Actually, this will be something Vlad soon faces...so hang in there ;)
Hm....well when I obsesses I just love the thing (or person, or vampire...or half vampire *cough*) and I'd so hurt anyone that tried to mess with him ^_~
2. Do you (and Vlad) have one favorite song that bets them all?
Nope. We both love too many to choose, but "Creep" by Radiohead is right up there.
Hm...I think I saw that song on rock band....
3. What time of day was Vlad born?
(5:43pm here! =D )
The smae as me, 9:26pm (we're both night owls) ;)
Yes! Score for the night owls!
4. Sharpies are the best thing, right?
Right alongside a good pair of fangs!
Yeah! *gives Vlad a sharpie to hold* There we go! Perfect!
I have a question for you Auntie. Exactly how do you work out the purple monkey problem? I am so confused. X_X
How old are you? (you look very young in your photo!) Bonus points: How old were you when first started REALLY writing?
How does your writing affect your son at school? (Is your son roughly the same age as Vlad? Do his friends think it's cool his mom's a writer? Since you mentioned that you base some of Vlad on your son, do his peers know this?)
1. Have you ever heard of Vampire Clan??? it took place in Flordia/New orleans.
No, but I'm totally game. What is it?
2. Have you ever once considered thinking you were a vampire?
Nope. Wishing I was one? Oh yeah. But I can totally get by without a diet of blood, so...
3. What tattoos do you have??
I have three currently (four next week!): a rose on my left calve, a dagger with a rose winding around it on my right calve (matches the one my husband has), and Vlad's mark on my lefty wrist.
I have a question for you Auntie. Exactly how do you work out the purple monkey problem? I am so confused. X_X
The answer to life, the universe and everything is 42. ;)
How old are you? (you look very young in your photo!)
Why, thank you! I'm actually 34. Yeah...no idea how THAT happened...
Bonus points: How old were you when first started REALLY writing?
That depends what you mean by REALLY. My first novel was completed in my young 20s, but I've written short stories and such religiously since I was about 14.
How does your writing affect your son at school?
My son is extremely proud of me and I think (but don't quote me on this) that my being published has had nothing but a positive effect on his life.
Is your son roughly the same age as Vlad?
Their birthdays are three days apart. (Vlad's November 21st, Jacob's November 18th)
Do his friends think it's cool his mom's a writer?
They seem to.
Since you mentioned that you base some of Vlad on your son, do his peers know this?
I'm almost positive they do. And, now that Jacob has dyed his hair black, he's even starting to look like Vlad :)=
Auntie, sorry for so many questions and if you are still doing Question Day I wanted to ask: Is writing a good way to make money? Or do you have other jobs you work at?
Is writing a good way to make money? Or do you have other jobs you work at?
This is a good question, and one I'm really glad to have asked. The truth is...no, writing is not a good way to make money. So if you're interested in becoming an author, you should go to college and get a great job to fall back on, just in case it doesn't work out the way you hope.
I'm very fortunate that writing makes me enough money that it is my sole career. The thing is, a lot of people here about authors like JK Rowling and Stephanie Meyer and their unbelievable dream incomes and think that's what most authors make, which couldn't be further from the truth. The truth is, most YA authors are bringing in advances between $0 and $5000--hardly enough to live on without the aid of additional income.
Do you listen to music when you're writing?
What is your middle name?
When did you decide you wanted to be an author?
Can you howl?(I know this is weird but I can)
Are you grossed out by snot?
Which do you like better twilight, night, day, or dawn?
