All you need to know about echoes of the past, groovy neato socks, and taking over the world

Do you remember that amazingly awesome school visit to LakeVille Middle School that I mentioned? Yeah, well, what I didn't mention is that that middle school and high school are where I was picked on growing up--my experiences in those schools led to all of Vlad's bully-related stress (though Vlad has it easier schoolwise than I did). I actually stressed over the idea of going back. Big time. Cried a lot. Considered cancelling. But then I realized that it's just a building, and that all of the people who picked on me are gone, and that I was going to hang with my Minions, and I felt much better. So I went, and you know what? It was the best day that I had ever spent at that school. Everyone was so, so great and I absolutely enjoyed spending time with them. I actually enjoyed walking through those halls.

While I was there, this really cool Minion asked how I'd dealt with bullies while I was there, whether or not I had any advice. I told him to keep his head down, to never let 'em see ya sweat, to wait it out and eventually, bullies will go away. Yes, tell a teacher or a friend or a parent if you feel you can (in fact, I urge you to reach out to someone, if just to vent), but the big key is to not let it bother you. Eventually, they'll find someone new to pick on (sad, but true). The best thing you can do is know that they are wrong. You're smarter, cooler, better than they are. And one day, when you're in your 30s, you could be a doctor with hundreds of patients, and they could be working at a gas station and still living with their parents. Bullies may be tough, but what they have in strength, they lack in endurance. Out-think them. Out-last them. And work hard in school, because the best revenge (not that I advocate vengeance) is utter success.

And when you are a success (SEGWAY ALERT!), you can afford all sorts of cool socks, of which I have an enormous obsession. I'm not sure if I've shared my sock love with you, Minions. I have everything from toed rainbow socks to Happy Bunny (my fave being "I'm not mean, you're just a sissy") to pink, white and black socks which read "kiss me stupid". I'm not sure if they're supposed to mean "kiss me, stupid" or if they're supposed to be as insulting as they seem to be without a comma, but I (heart) them. Am I the only one with a sock fetish?

Something else I've noticed about my wardrobe lately: I have a deep love of pseudo military clothing. Just trrust me. Once I take over the world, I can certainly dress for it.

Now I just have to figure out whether or not it's acceptable for me to do events in my usual clothes (which are all sorts of yummy goth), or if I should dress up in the clothes I've been wearing to events (which make me feel very uncomfortably like a grown up). What I want to wear are black jeans, a military top, and my pink and black Converse. But I have this ongoing nightmare of booksellers never asking me back. Huh. I have issues.

For those of you who have emailed to ask if there will be another Vlad book and when it will be out: the third book in the Chronicles is TENTH GRADE BLEEDS and I have no idea when it will be in stores, but it is written! (and oh boy...you guys have no idea how good it's gonna be...) Also, if you want to know if you can use my vampire smiley, the answer is yes. Just make sure you tell people all about Vlad when they see it. In fact, the next time you're at a bookstore or library, it would rock my groovy neato socks off if you could tell booksellers and librarians all about my books. They like to hear what people are reading, and it absolutely would help your Auntie Heather out (not to mention our favorite fanged boy). So, get out there and spread the Vlad love, and them make more friends read the books too (I often picture the Horde working like the aliens in Puppet Masters...it's awesome!). You guys rock.

Thanks for the advice, Heather! Bullies are a major problem in ANY school. Wouldn't it be awesome if you could track some of those people down and show off how amazing you are? Yay for High-School reunions! You'd be cooler than anyone there. :)=

ANYwho, socks are AMA-ZA-ZING! I was freaking out because I got an awesome pair of thigh high black and white striped ones that remind me of The Nightmare Before Christmas. I think we need vamp-smilie knee-high socks. That would be the coolest thing EVER! They'd go nice with my combat boots.

You should most DEFINATELY come dressed in all gothyness to your signings. Come to Illinois, and we can dress gothy together. :D Be who you are Aunty. People will love you even more for it. Most people at bookstores probably won't even care how you dress cuz you're famous and they're not. They're envious. Tehe! Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.

Hope you're having a good week, Heather!

Socks are AWESOME! Especially in the winter when I get to wear those really, really fuzzy ones :P. I've told ALL of my friends about the best, most awesome vampire series in the WHOLE world: YOURS. And it's been killing me wondering what the title of book three would be, so thank you so very much for the update!

Your Vampire/Hippie minion,
Rainbow '27' Stardust :D

Poor Auntie, I am bullied at school a lot like you were. In fact, because I have made better grades than my class in science and English I don't have to take these two big tests coming up in each class. (No idea how I did that in science) And everyone calls me a nerd. But I don't care much really, I ignore them. I rather be a nerd than failing. Though, I'd rather the name bookworm instead. :)=

Also Auntie. I was wondering if Vladimir could also be spelt Vlademir. In my book i'm writing the character is Vlademir but I want to make sure it's pronounced like Vladimir. Also, if you don't mind Aunite, I used your name Brewer for one of my characters names. You are the fun-loving awesome teacher at the school! ^_^

Y'know, it's so cool to have my own words psoken back to me. How many times I have urged people to be themselves? It's silly that I'd even hesitate, isn't it? Okay. Back to me and all my lovely gothy things, then. Thank you, Minions. :)=

I've been waring my hoodie everyday! (besides one day ware I wore my NGS t-shirt) I don't have it on now though, due to all the rain we've been getting it's quiet wet and cold still.

I've written an essay to try to get into 10th Grade Honors English and used Vlad in it as my best friend. I tried to send it to you but it failed D: I also tried to send you a picture I did with Vlad in it..and that didn't work. And that's not it, I started a story from Vlad's POV (not even meaning to) and that didn't get to you either. I was quiet bummed.

I shall keep up the work though and always try to improve my efforts!

On the subject of bullies:
After being walked over in the 7th grade, and kicked by this one guy as an everyday event I started waring black and not taking crap from people. I honestly don't care much for what people think of me so it's been easy. Like your advice, I ignore them *or stare them down* and work hard to be succesfull. After all we go to school to learn, make our way easier for a good future, and to find our true selves no?

I'm glad to hear you'll be back to your goth clothes, after all if it's what you feel comfortable in it'll make your trips funner and better for everyone. Who likes to work when they have to ware uniform stuff? Blah!

<3 Always,
K8

I love socks too! They never match the rest of my outfit and I'm proud of it! I have ones with duckies, cows, koalas, cats, blue leopard. Ah, socks are the best fashion statement! Socks for me are what shoes are to other girls ^_^

What People Are Saying About 'Eighth Grade Bites'

"A spooky mystery that's funny, gruesome, heartwarming, spellbinding, sad, joyous, surprising and topped off with a tasty blend of blood and chocolate. Yum. What more could you ask for?" ~D.J. MacHale, New York Times-bestselling author of PENDRAGON: JOURNAL OF AN ADVENTURE THROUGH TIME AND SPACE

"'Eighth grade Bites' had me on the edge of my seat. It's a great piece of fiction. It drops you right into the action, grabs you by the throat (pun intended), and won't let go. Vladimir Tod is a truly sympathetic character cursed with an existence not of his own doing, but doing his best to do the right thing. It's part 'Goosebumps' mixed with 'Harry Potter' and a dash – no, a heaping tablespoon – of Stephen King. If you're in eighth grade, or a vampire, or an eighth grade vampire, 'Eighth Grade Bites' is a definite must read!"~Butch Hartman, creator of Nickelodeon's THE FAIRLY ODD PARENTS and DANNY PHANTOM

"Eighth Grade Bites is a terrific vampire tale told with a sharp, middle-school grin. It definitely does not bite!" ~Christopher Moore, author of BLOODSUCKING FIENDS and A DIRTY JOB

"Eighth Grade Bites is a delightful novel filled with dark, biting humor that will appeal to everyone who ever felt they were different. A deft hand at depicting the angst of teen years, Heather Brewer does a wonderful job blending vampire legend with the modern day horror that strikes fear in the heart of so many: the eighth grade."~Katie MacAlister, New York Times-bestselling author of EVEN VAMPIRES GET THE BLUES

"Heather Brewer has invented the most endearing of vampires in Vlad, an eighth grader juggling the woes of adolescence with the decidedly unique difficulties of being a vampire. She perfectly captures the humor and angst of eighth grade, mixed with a nail-biting adventure. Utterly charming and irresistible!" ~Liza Conrad, author of HIGH SCHOOL BITES: THE LUCY CHRONICLES

"This book will fool you. Just when you think you've identified it as a story lit by the cheery glow of a slightly scary jack-o-lantern, it becomes something else -- a tale told by the flickering light of a dying campfire late at night. And the shadows are very dark indeed. A surprising mix of humor and horror." ~Douglas Rees, author of VAMPIRE HIGH

"Fresh and fast-paced, with just the right brew of chills and laughs. I’m looking forward to finding out what happens when Vlad hits Grade Nine." ~Nancy Baker, author of KISS OF THE VAMPIRE

"A fabulous book from a gifted storyteller! I never wanted it to end." ~Gena Showalter, author of OH MY GOTH
