13 Hoodies for Halloween!

Yep. It's a contest! And a biggie, too. I'm going to give away 13 of Vlad's hoodies throughout October. And you can win one!

I'm going to be running this contest a little differently than I have done so in the past. This time, you don't need to sign up for my newsletter at all, and I won't be posting it on my Win Things page, just on my blog and MySpace. It's very simple. I'm going to give away 13 of Vlad's hoodies, as featured on the cover of EIGHTH GRADE BITES, over the course of October, which just so happens to be Vlad's favorite month of all (and my favorite number). Do you have a hoodie yet? No? Well then, here's your chance!

It's super simple to enter. I'm going to ask a question about EIGHTH GRADE BITES. All you have to do is either post your answer here, message me on MySpace or email me your answer. If you get it right, you're entered into that day's drawing.

(NOTE: BE CAREFUL READING COMMENTS DURING OCTOBER, AS YOU MIGHT ACCIDENTALLY ENCOUNTER SPOILERS!)

I'll draw for that contest right before I post the next question, which is when I'll announce the previous contest winner.

If you don't win, keep entering! (But if you do win, hey man, give the other Minions a chance...you can't win again) And, to increase your chances, for every place online that you encourage people to come on over and check out my contest (be it a blog, forum, MySpace comment, wherever), if you can send me proof (ie, a link), I'll give you an additional entry for that day's contest.

Now, you don't have to buy the book, but it really helps if you've read it. So borrow it from a friend, pick one up at the library, or if you like, buy a copy, and you'll have a much better chance at winning. Of course, I'll take it easy on you with the first question. But trust me, you'll want to study up and get those answers to me as quick as you can. Because this contest is really a series of thirteen contests...and these hoodies are going to go fast (time flies when you're having fun, right?). Remember: if you don't enter...you can't win!

And I'm posting this first one early, to give lots of people time to enter and to spread the word. Here we go, day one's question!

Day 1 (Drawing is on October 7th): If you've read EIGHTH GRADE BITES, tell me what your favorite part was. If you haven't read it, tell me why you want to.

Ok I so have to get a hoodie, this is like my new life goal (man I have weird goals, like to get a 100 Sharpies, which I did =D)

Well how about this, Before I read Eighth Grade Bites I had wanted to read it because:
1. I saw the flash video about it.
2. Vladimir looked(and is) really hot.
3. Vladimir is a vampire, and he's around my grade.
4. He's the outcast of the school, like I am.

Now when I finally got my copy and devoured it my favorite part of Eighth Grade Bites is...
Vladimir, who he is, is what makes me die to read more about him. Only a half vampire, yes but still the need of blood is so great. To know that he goes to school every day (well mostly ;D ) and has human people he loves is just an amazing thought to me. To be that needy, like us humans need food, but if we where hungry would we resist eating food that's right there? I doubt it. So for me I love vampires like Vladimir. I find that self sacrifice so indescribable, and just so amazing. So yes, that is my favorite part about Eighth Grade Bites.

I bought the book and want to read it because, well the hoodie is so darned cool on the cover. (Really because everyone says how awesome it is.) No, I haven't read it yet, because my sons, BOTH of them took it away from me.

I will make sure they post too because they definitely have favorite parts!

My son hasn't read it yet ... he's still a bit young for all this, but he was Dracula last year and I know he'd love the hoodie! So, for the love of him:

My favorite part is how Nell keeps Vlad from starving ... getting blood from the blood bank, making blood muffins, etc.

I bought Eighth Grade Bites for my son mainly because I know you from Backspace. After reading the first couple of pages by myself, I'll finish it well before I'll be able to read it to my son (we're on book 5 of the Harry Potter series).

I want to read EIGHTH GRADE BITES because I don't like the romanticised version of vampires prevalent (if that's a real word) in some modern fiction. Therefore, since Vlad's a young teen, he'll be the best person to expend the icky, yucky, gritty details - without the three-letter S-word or romance clouding his perspective. Yay for Vlad for telling it like it is - with no faff!

Have a lovely day! :-)

I haven't had a chance to pick it up---yet. I will though. I want to read it because it seems like a really cool book and it's original! I would completely love to see a movie version as well! :*) Plus, I never won an ARC or anything else on here, so to win a hoodie would be ultra cool because I'd look like Vlad! :*)

It's so hard to pick a favourite part. I loved the whole thing! But if I had to narrow things down, I'd say, I loved Vlad's vulnerability and his humanity. You don't expect that in a vampire and it was very refreshing.

Thank you all for entering, Minions! I'm really enjoying learning what it is about our boy Vlad that intrigues you so much. Keep up the good work--and get those extra entries in for helping spread the word!

Awww Heather, what a great surprise contest :)

My favorite part of the book is that you wrote it... and signed an ARC for me :)

I think my favorite part of the story is Vlad's friendship with Henry. That guy will go through anything for his friend, and that alone says a lot for Vlad's character.

Oooh!

When Vlad's teacher/uncle dressed up like mythological characters in class and Vlad's assignment when he drew the piece of paper turned to Vampire.

(answer above is on behalf of my kid. I personally liked Nell. She reminded me of the lady next door from one John Bellairs books--House with a Clock in its Walls, I think)

Fun contest, Heather!

I want to read 8th grade bites because I'm guessing that my 7th grade students would love it. (Then I can order more for the library!) And I'd love the hoodie because I'd be the coolest, fang-wearing English teacher in the school.

Hehe, I liked the part when he looked older and fierce after revealing Tom's secret, and the part when he read his essay out in class. "....at least I don't have to wait in long lines at the blood bank." lol

I read this book because it sounded interesting, (and because the jacket looked cool) as it was so much more after reading it. Vladimir Tod souds too cool to be real (even if he isn't). I saw the site(which is too awsome to describe) shortly after reading this fangtastic book. I can't wait until april, when NINTH GRADE SLAYS. (he he :)= ).

Oh, man! I took one look at the cover of Eighth Grade Bites and thought, "That is a sweet hoodie."
I am just dying to get my hands on one of 'em.

My favorite part of the book is when the man dressed in black sucks the blood out of Kate Donahue. I imagined myself in her situation; how terrifying it would be for some random jerk to just up and take a bite out of your neck. I would probably handle the situation the way Edgar Poe did, except for me it would flow out.

What People Are Saying About 'Eighth Grade Bites'

"A spooky mystery that's funny, gruesome, heartwarming, spellbinding, sad, joyous, surprising and topped off with a tasty blend of blood and chocolate. Yum. What more could you ask for?" ~D.J. MacHale, New York Times-bestselling author of PENDRAGON: JOURNAL OF AN ADVENTURE THROUGH TIME AND SPACE

"'Eighth grade Bites' had me on the edge of my seat. It's a great piece of fiction. It drops you right into the action, grabs you by the throat (pun intended), and won't let go. Vladimir Tod is a truly sympathetic character cursed with an existence not of his own doing, but doing his best to do the right thing. It's part 'Goosebumps' mixed with 'Harry Potter' and a dash – no, a heaping tablespoon – of Stephen King. If you're in eighth grade, or a vampire, or an eighth grade vampire, 'Eighth Grade Bites' is a definite must read!"~Butch Hartman, creator of Nickelodeon's THE FAIRLY ODD PARENTS and DANNY PHANTOM

"Eighth Grade Bites is a terrific vampire tale told with a sharp, middle-school grin. It definitely does not bite!" ~Christopher Moore, author of BLOODSUCKING FIENDS and A DIRTY JOB

"Eighth Grade Bites is a delightful novel filled with dark, biting humor that will appeal to everyone who ever felt they were different. A deft hand at depicting the angst of teen years, Heather Brewer does a wonderful job blending vampire legend with the modern day horror that strikes fear in the heart of so many: the eighth grade."~Katie MacAlister, New York Times-bestselling author of EVEN VAMPIRES GET THE BLUES

"Heather Brewer has invented the most endearing of vampires in Vlad, an eighth grader juggling the woes of adolescence with the decidedly unique difficulties of being a vampire. She perfectly captures the humor and angst of eighth grade, mixed with a nail-biting adventure. Utterly charming and irresistible!" ~Liza Conrad, author of HIGH SCHOOL BITES: THE LUCY CHRONICLES

"This book will fool you. Just when you think you've identified it as a story lit by the cheery glow of a slightly scary jack-o-lantern, it becomes something else -- a tale told by the flickering light of a dying campfire late at night. And the shadows are very dark indeed. A surprising mix of humor and horror." ~Douglas Rees, author of VAMPIRE HIGH

"Fresh and fast-paced, with just the right brew of chills and laughs. I’m looking forward to finding out what happens when Vlad hits Grade Nine." ~Nancy Baker, author of KISS OF THE VAMPIRE

"A fabulous book from a gifted storyteller! I never wanted it to end." ~Gena Showalter, author of OH MY GOTH
