What People Are Saying About 'Eighth Grade Bites'
"A spooky mystery that's funny, gruesome, heartwarming, spellbinding,
sad, joyous, surprising and topped off with a tasty blend of blood and
chocolate. Yum. What more could you ask for?" ~D.J. MacHale,
New York Times-bestselling author of PENDRAGON: JOURNAL OF AN ADVENTURE
THROUGH TIME AND SPACE
"'Eighth grade Bites' had me on the edge of my seat. It's a
great piece of fiction. It drops you right into the action, grabs
you by the throat (pun intended), and won't let go. Vladimir Tod
is a truly sympathetic character cursed with an existence not of
his own doing, but doing his best to do the right thing. It's part
'Goosebumps' mixed with 'Harry Potter' and a dash – no, a heaping
tablespoon – of Stephen King. If you're in eighth grade, or
a vampire, or an eighth grade vampire, 'Eighth Grade Bites' is a
definite must read!"~Butch Hartman, creator of Nickelodeon's
THE FAIRLY ODD PARENTS and DANNY PHANTOM
"Eighth Grade Bites is a terrific vampire tale told with a
sharp, middle-school grin. It definitely does not bite!" ~Christopher
Moore, author of BLOODSUCKING FIENDS and A DIRTY JOB
"Eighth Grade Bites is a delightful novel filled with dark,
biting humor that will appeal to everyone who ever felt they were
different. A deft hand at depicting the angst of teen years, Heather
Brewer does a wonderful job blending vampire legend with the modern
day horror that strikes fear in the heart of so many: the eighth
grade."~Katie MacAlister, New York Times-bestselling author
of EVEN VAMPIRES GET THE BLUES
"Heather Brewer has invented the most endearing of vampires
in Vlad, an eighth grader juggling the woes of adolescence with the
decidedly unique difficulties of being a vampire. She perfectly captures
the humor and angst of eighth grade, mixed with a nail-biting adventure.
Utterly charming and irresistible!" ~Liza Conrad, author of
HIGH SCHOOL BITES: THE LUCY CHRONICLES
"This book will fool you. Just when you think you've identified
it as a story lit by the cheery glow of a slightly scary jack-o-lantern,
it becomes something else -- a tale told by the flickering light
of a dying campfire late at night. And the shadows are very dark
indeed. A surprising mix of humor and horror." ~Douglas
Rees, author of VAMPIRE HIGH
"Fresh and fast-paced, with just the right brew of chills and
laughs. I’m looking forward to finding out what happens when
Vlad hits Grade Nine." ~Nancy Baker, author of KISS OF THE
VAMPIRE
"A fabulous book from a gifted storyteller! I never wanted
it to end." ~Gena Showalter, author of OH MY GOTH |

Thanks for the poll. xD
BTW: I sorta like Meredith, but only the nice part about her. Other than that, I don't like her. Sorry.
Anyways, I'm glad you're writing more. My friends and I are anxiously waiting. ((BTW: My friend, Emma, has been hogging me to borrow my books. She keeps asking over and over to. *But, at school though* So, the publishing company better hurry. xD
There is absolutely nothing wrong with disliking any of my characters. (Well...I kinda hope you like Vlad, but other than that, it's free reign--and you're totally entitled to dislike him too) Can I ask what it is about her specifically that you don't like?
Yay, you! And yay, Emma! My publisher won't hurry fast enough, it seems, for you Minions--TENTH GRADE BLEEDS will be out July 2009, just over a year away. Sorry! :)
Okay. it's not so much that I hate Meredith the character, it's more like I hate how Vlad thinks of her. It's like I can picture pink hearts floating all around her when ever Vlad sees her. He can go on for a whole page about how beautiful she is, when to me, she sounds like a pink nightmare. It's *really* off putting when Vlad gets all mushy.
To tell the truth, I'd really love to see Vlad find a girl who has a real personality beyond being a walking pink cloud.
An excellent answer! And it makes perfect sense--it also ties in well with the work I'm doing on ELEVENTH. Thanks!
Yeah like I said before maybe loath was harsh....it's not really her that I loath. It's Vlad ending up with her. I'd rather see him find some friends before he got the girl and I'd love to see who he ends up with as one of his good friends. You know a relationship that might just last beyond high school.
Meredith as a character and not her being with Vlad I think I see her as a popular but nice kind of person. One of those people that could end up being hated because she has "everything"
What great food for thought, K8! Thanks!
You're welcome! I can't wait to see what happens!
Meredith is slowly growing on me. In the EGB she was sort only an ideal, the object of Vlad's crush, but in NGS we get to see more of her character. The part when she "rescues" Vlad from the boiler room is one of my favorite scenes. It shows that she is a really strong person and doesn't care about what other people think about what she does or who she is friends with. Also, Vlad response was very sweet, he gladly accepts the help without trying to look like a macho jerk.
I don't know what the future holds from them, after all any serious relationship would have to lead to Vlad disclosing his secret otherwise there could never be any trust or honesty, but I can't wait to find out!
Thanks for the great stories!!

I really enjoyed writing the boiler room scene. It was one of those moments that surprised me. I initially had planned for Henry to come to the rescue, demonstrating that Vlad's skills were growing....and then Meredith popped in. So yeah...i think there's more to her. More that we'll see as we move along.
Or not. ;)
I like Meredith, but you're right about the two reasons that I don't like her.
#1. she does wear wayyyyyy too much pink
and
#2.Yeah, I do think Vlad is too amazing for her, if you know what I mean ;)
